An Ajax alarm system is made up of a few families of devices that all talk to one hub. Once you understand this logic, the rest becomes simple. This guide goes through each element in a few lines and links to the article or collection that covers the topic in detail. To see the whole range, go to the Ajax alarm page.
1. The hub: the brain of the system
All devices connect to the hub, which decides, alerts and communicates. Four models are common:
- Hub (€208.66 incl. VAT): Ethernet and GSM, 100 devices, no photo verification.
- Hub 2 (€292.75 incl. VAT): Ethernet and 2 2G SIMs, photo verification, 32 scenarios.
- Hub 2 4G (€440.32 incl. VAT): like the Hub 2, with 2 4G SIMs.
- Hub 2 Plus (€512.48 incl. VAT): 200 devices, 200 users, 25 groups, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and 2 4G SIMs.
A Hub BP (€347.72 incl. VAT) runs on an external battery for sites without stable mains power. To choose: Hub 2 vs Hub 2 Plus and the hubs collection. Prices are indicative: the price displayed on the product page prevails.
2. Jeweller: the radio
Jeweller is Ajax's proprietary encrypted radio, with frequency hopping and a range of up to 2,000 m in open field. Inside a building, real range depends on the walls: always test the signal in the app before fixing a device. ReX 2 range extenders extend coverage (5 maximum per hub). The advantages and limits of a wireless system are examined in Ajax alarm: review, advantages and limits.
3. Detectors
They report an intrusion, an opening or an incident:
- MotionProtect: infrared motion, 12 m, adjustable pet immunity.
- MotionProtect Plus: infrared and microwave, for verandas, draughts and sun.
- MotionCam: photos on every alarm; MotionCam PhOD: photo on demand.
- DoorProtect: magnetic contact; DoorProtect Plus: with shock and tilt.
- GlassProtect and CombiProtect: glass break, alone or combined with motion.
- MotionProtect Outdoor and MotionCam Outdoor: outdoor detection with anti-masking, before the building.
- LeaksProtect: water leak.
Placement: about 2.4 m high, the intruder must cross the field; avoid windows in sun, radiators, air conditioning and curtains. How many: 4 to 6 for a detached house, 2 to 3 for an apartment. See the Ajax detectors collection.
4. Sirens
The StreetSiren (€153.92 incl. VAT) goes outdoors, high up (over 2.5 m), visible from the street. The HomeSiren (€79.34 incl. VAT) is placed indoors, outside the protected room. In Belgium, the outdoor siren is limited to 3 minutes. A hub accepts a maximum of 10 sirens and keypads in total. See Ajax sirens.
5. Keypads and remote controls
The KeyPad (€122.96 incl. VAT) works by code. The KeyPad Plus (€158.64 incl. VAT) adds an RFID reader for badges and cards. The KeyPad TouchScreen (€427.54 incl. VAT) is a model with a screen. Place it indoors, near the entrance, at about 1.4 m, never on the facade. The SpaceControl remote (€37.27 incl. VAT) arms and disarms with one press. For business premises, read Ajax alarm for shops and offices. Collection: Ajax keypads.
6. The app
The Ajax app is used to add devices by QR code, test the signal, arm by group, manage users, create scenarios and view the history. Notifications, photo verification and updates are included: no mandatory subscription. See Ajax alarm without subscription.
7. Cameras
There is a kit combining a Hub and a 3 MP Wi-Fi dome camera (€571.89 incl. VAT). A camera shows what is happening; an alarm detects and alerts. The two complement each other without replacing one another: read alarm or camera?. If you film, Belgian law requires a declaration: see camera declaration in Belgium.
8. Monitoring and intervention
The hub can transmit its alarms to a monitoring centre via SIA DC-09, SurGard Contact ID or ADEMCO 685. Our dispatching from €21.78/month incl. VAT includes verification on images and calling emergency services. Intervention after alarm costs €30.25/month incl. VAT, plus €90.75 incl. VAT per intervention (European Private Security, approved no. 0549945656). The M2M SIM card is €9.68/month incl. VAT. Details: alarm linked to a monitoring centre and installation and services.
9. Kits or separate parts?
A kit gathers the basic devices. Examples: the Hub kit (€373.65 incl. VAT) with motion detector, door contact and remote; the Hub 2 kit with PIRCAM (€544.46 incl. VAT); the Hub 2 Plus kit (€813.65 incl. VAT); the complete Hub 2 kit with PIRCAM, RFID keypad, indoor siren and remote (€856.34 incl. VAT). All are in the alarm kits collection. 10. The legal framework in Belgium
An alarm system must be declared on police-on-web within 10 days of going into service, then confirmed every year. The outdoor siren is limited to 3 minutes. You can install your own home yourself (allow half a day). For a third party or a business, a company approved by the FPS Interior is required. Our installation: €302.50 incl. VAT for up to 10 items within 15 km of Brussels, by Belgium Security Brussels (approved no. 0666948937); beyond that, travel €121 incl. VAT. Read declaring your alarm system in Belgium.
