Ajax TurretCam and DomeCam cameras

Ajax has expanded its ecosystem to include video. These IP cameras are operated from the same Ajax Security System app as the alarm system: a single interface for arming the system, receiving alerts and watching the live feed. That is the main argument compared with a standalone video installation.

TurretCam or DomeCam?

TurretCam is a turret camera: the lens is visible and can be adjusted by hand, without removing any covers. It can be adjusted in a matter of seconds and, thanks to its shape, withstands heavy rain well. This is the ideal model for installation on a façade, under a canopy, or on the ceiling of a garage.

DomeCam is a vandal-proof dome: the lens is protected by a hemispherical polycarbonate shell, and the whole unit is designed to withstand impacts. It is used in public indoor areas, stairwells, building lobbies – anywhere the camera is within easy reach.

Given the same resolution and optics, both produce the same image. The choice therefore comes down to context, not performance.

5 MP or 8 MP?

The Baseline range is available in 5 MP and 8 MP (4K). The 5 MP model is suitable for general surveillance of an entrance or courtyard. The 8 MP model offers greater detail than a 5 MP model when capturing the same scene, though this results in a data stream that is approximately twice as large on the hard disk and over the network. The distance at which a person or number plate can be identified depends, amongst other things, on the focal length, field of view, lighting and installation conditions.

Fixed or varifocal lens

Models with a fixed lens are available in 2.8 mm (wide angle, approx. 100°, for a room or an entrance) and 4.0 mm (approx. 80°, for a façade or a driveway). The models HLVF have a 2.8 – 12 mm varifocal lens: you adjust the framing when setting up, which prevents you from choosing the wrong focal length when the scene has not yet been finalised or when the distance is unusual.

Smart IR or hybrid lighting?

Standard models use a smart infrared: a clear black-and-white image at night, invisible to the naked eye, without attracting attention.

The models HL (Hybrid Light) combine infrared LEDs and white LEDs. The camera remains in infrared mode when inactive, then switches to white light as soon as movement is detected: the recording then switches to colour. The colour of an item of clothing or a vehicle often makes all the difference when it comes to identification, and the sudden illumination has an immediate deterrent effect.

What you need to make them work

These cameras require an Ajax NVR for local recording, and an Ethernet connection — via PoE if the NVR supports it, in which case only one cable per camera is required. Choose a hard drive from the surveillance range, sized according to the desired retention period: around 1 TB for two 5 MP cameras recording continuously for one week.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need an Ajax Hub to use these cameras?
No, they work with an NVR on its own. But the main benefit — alarm and video in a single app — requires you to have a Hub as well.

Are they ONVIF-compatible?
Yes, they can be integrated with a third-party ONVIF-compliant NVR. However, the advanced analytics features remain fully usable only within the Ajax ecosystem.

Are they frost-resistant?
The outdoor models are IP65-certified and operate across a wide temperature range, which is more than adequate for a Belgian winter.
