PTZ stands for Pan, Tilt, Zoom: the camera rotates, tilts, and zooms on command. A single, well-placed PTZ can cover what would require three or four fixed cameras.

The Real Benefit, and Its Limitation

A PTZ excels in large open areas: parking lots, logistics yards, fields, industrial perimeters. It allows you to follow a person, zoom in on a license plate, or inspect a specific point remotely.

Its limitation is structural: it only looks at one place at a time. While it's observing the gate, the back dock is not being filmed. Therefore, a PTZ never completely replaces fixed cameras — it complements them.

Automatic Patrols and Tracking

Dahua models manage preset positions and scheduled patrols: the camera automatically scans a sequence of points. Versions with auto-tracking lock onto a detected subject and keep it in the frame, eliminating the need for an operator behind the screen.

Check Before Buying

The optical zoom (and not digital): this determines the distance at which a face remains identifiable. The infrared or laser range at night. And the power supply: a PTZ consumes more than a fixed camera and often exceeds the budget of a standard PoE port — plan for PoE+ or a dedicated power supply.
