Ajax BulletCam cameras

The BulletCam is the cylindrical, directional camera in the Ajax range. Its elongated shape, mounted on a ball joint, makes it visible from a distance — which is precisely the aim on a driveway, a car park or along a fence: a camera that can be seen acts as a deterrent before it even needs to record anything.

Why a bullet camera rather than a turret camera?

Three practical reasons. Firstly, the deterrence: the shape is instantly recognisable, even at night and from a distance. Then the integrated sun shield, which protects the lens from direct rain and low-angle sunlight — a real advantage on an exposed façade. Finally, the bracket reach: the offset mounting allows the camera to be positioned away from a wall or a roof overhang.

On the other hand, a bullet camera is more vulnerable to impact and vandalism than a dome camera. At eye level and in public places, opt for a DomeCam.

Resolution and optics

The range is available in 5 MP and 8 MP (4K), with a fixed lens of 2.8 mm (wide-angle) or 4.0 mm (the usual choice for a façade or a driveway), and in a 2.8 – 12 mm varifocal version on the HLVF models.

For an access driveway of ten to twenty metres, a 5 MP camera with a 4.0 mm lens will generally meet the need. If you want to read a number plate at the entrance to a gate, opt for an 8 MP varifocal camera and tighten the framing on the area of interest: the result depends in particular on the focal length chosen, the field of view, the lighting and the installation conditions.

Night vision

Standard models use the smart infrared: black and white, discreet, with no visible lighting. The models HL (Hybrid Light) add white LEDs that light up on detection and switch the recording to colour. In a car park or courtyard, this switch achieves two things: generally more reliable identification, and a visible reaction that often causes the intruder to back off.

Installation

Mount the camera between 2.5 and 3 metres, with your back to the dominant light source. A bullet camera facing the setting sun or a glazed frontage will return only a black silhouette. Position it so that the intruder crosses the field of view rather than walking straight towards the lens: lateral movement is detected and read far more easily.

The connection is made via Ethernet, ideally using PoE from the NVR: a single cable carries both power and data, which halves the installation time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the infrared range?
In practice, 25 to 30 metres for the models in the range. Beyond that, the image is still visible but the detail is lost: the stated range refers to the illumination range, not the identification range.

Is one camera per entrance required?
For identification purposes, this is preferable. A panoramic camera covering three entrances spreads its resolution across the entire scene, leaving little usable detail at each one.

Can they be combined with DomeCams?
Yes, and that is the most common setup: a bullet camera outside as a deterrent, and a dome camera indoors or in an accessible area.
