Why use a licensed company

In Belgium, installing an alarm system on someone else's premises falls under private security legislation: only a company licensed by the FPS Home Affairs may install, maintain or repair an alarm system on a customer's behalf, and its technicians must hold an identification card issued by that same department. Buying equipment and installing it yourself, in your own home, remains unrestricted.

You can check our licence with the FPS Home Affairs, which identifies security companies by their company number — ours is 0666.948.937. An installer without a licence is working illegally, and that comes to light at the worst possible moment: when the insurer asks for the paperwork after a claim.

An alarm system that is not connected to a monitoring centre must also be declared on police-on-web within ten days of being commissioned. We set out the procedure in our guide: Declaring your alarm system in Belgium.
