Wireless Wi-Fi cameras

These cameras connect via Wi-Fi : no network cable to run to the installation point. This is the solution when drilling through a wall or running a conduit is not an option — a renovation, a rented flat, or an outbuilding at the back of the garden.

What you need to know before ordering

• Wi-Fi does away with the network cable, but not the power cable. A power socket is required nearby, except for battery-powered and solar-powered models.
• Signal range is the deciding factor. A load-bearing wall or a significant distance between the router and the camera degrades the video stream. Check the Wi-Fi coverage at the installation point before purchasing.
• For a permanent and long-lasting installation, the cable remains more reliable: see the Dahua IP cameras powered by PoE, where a single cable carries both the image and the power.

Recording

Most of these cameras accept a microSD card for local recording. To keep footage from several cameras over time, plan for an NVR recorder and a CCTV hard drive.

Wi-Fi or cable, 4 or 8 MP, prices and Belgian rules: it’s all summarised in our guide to choosing your surveillance camera.
