4 MP is now the standard for professional video surveillance, and our default recommendation for the vast majority of installations.

Why 4 MP instead of 2 MP?

2 MP (Full HD) is still adequate for a small room, but it quickly shows its limitations when trying to identify a face from more than three meters away. 4 MP doubles the usable definition: a face remains identifiable from six or eight meters, and a license plate becomes readable on a driveway.

Why not directly 8 MP?

Because 8 MP doubles the bit rate and therefore the archiving volume, for a limited real gain on a narrow scene. On an entrance door, a corridor or a cash register, 4 MP gives exactly the same identification result while occupying half the disk space. Reserve 8 MP for large areas.

Storage to plan for

For motion detection recording, estimate roughly 1 to 2 TB per 4 MP camera for thirty days of archiving. Four 4 MP cameras fit comfortably on a 4 to 6 TB surveillance hard drive.

To check before buying

Infrared range (30 m is sufficient on a facade, 50 m in open terrain), IP66 or IP67 waterproofing rating outdoors, IK10 if the camera is accessible, and the presence of WizSense if you want to avoid alerts triggered by animals and foliage.
