Wireless: connecting cameras without running cable
Wireless is the answer where trenching or running cable costs more than the equipment itself: an outbuilding, a car park, a construction site, a lift shaft. Two approaches coexist here. Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint links are used to bridge a distance: they are chosen according to the range stated by the manufacturer and the actual line of sight between the two antennas. Access points, for their part, cover an area for Wi-Fi cameras and mobile devices.
To carry video, think in terms of usable throughput: add up the bit rates of the cameras that will pass through the link and keep some margin, because a radio link shares its capacity between all the associated devices and degrades with distance. Most of the access points in this selection are powered over PoE from the network switch, which avoids having to provide a mains socket at height or on a façade.
