Choosing an NVR based on the number of channels is like choosing a car based on the number of seats. It's necessary, but not sufficient, and it's not even the primary limiting factor.

1. The number of channels: the "two more" rule

One channel = one camera. The rule of thumb is simple: always choose at least two more channels than your current need.

An installation always expands: a gate you want to monitor, a utility room, an annex. Replacing an overloaded recorder costs much more than overestimating your needs from the start. If you're hesitating between 4 and 8 channels, go for the 8.

2. Bandwidth: the number one mistake

This is where half of all installations fail. Every NVR specifies a maximum input bitrate, expressed in Mbps. This figure caps the sum of all camera streams.

In practical terms: a 4 MP camera consumes about 4 to 8 Mbps depending on the scene and settings; an 8 MP camera can go up to 8 to 16 Mbps. Eight 8 MP cameras can therefore demand over 100 Mbps — exceeding what an entry-level 8-channel NVR can handle, even though all eight ports exist.

Symptoms of exceeding the limit: dropped streams, incomplete recordings, frozen images during playback. The equipment isn't faulty, it's undersized.

Check the total Mbps throughput on the technical specifications, and sum your stream requirements before purchasing. This is the only check that prevents a replacement.

3. PoE or non-PoE?

A PoE NVR includes a switch that powers cameras via the network cable. Only one cable per camera, no need for separate power supplies on the facade or under an awning. For new installations, this is almost always the right choice: installation time is halved, and you eliminate outdoor power adapters, which are a common point of failure.

A non-PoE model is justified when cameras are already powered by other means, when they exceed 100m of network cable (an intermediate switch would be needed anyway), or when the building's network infrastructure already provides PoE.

The PoE budget trap

On a 16-channel model, the total available PoE power may be less than the sum of what sixteen cameras require — especially with motorized, heated, or white-light models. Check the total power in watts, not just the number of PoE ports.

4. Drive bays

The number of bays determines your maximum storage capacity, and thus your historical retention.

A single-bay NVR is limited to the largest available drive. This is sufficient for two to four cameras. A two-bay model allows for later expansion without replacing anything. For more than eight cameras, or whenever footage has evidentiary value, aim for four bays or more, with the option to configure RAID so that a drive failure doesn't destroy the archive.

Two medium-sized drives are better than one very large one: the failure of one won't make you lose everything.

5. NVR or XVR?

An NVR records IP cameras over a network. An XVR also accepts HDCVI analog cameras over coaxial cable.

The XVR has only one use case, but it's a common one: renovation. If coaxial cabling already exists, you can upgrade cameras without removing a single cable, going from poor analog quality to 4 or 8 MP HDCVI. The savings are considerable: recabling a building often costs more than all the equipment combined.

For new installations, opt for IP and a PoE NVR.

6. WizSense: fewer false alarms, less storage

WizSense cameras and recorders distinguish humans or vehicles from other objects. The benefit is twofold. First, alerts that are actually meaningful, because the camera stops notifying for a cat, a branch, or a passing cloud. Second, a significantly reduced recording volume, since detection is no longer triggered incorrectly.

For an outdoor installation, this option often provides the quickest return on its additional cost.
